Yesterday, during day 2 of the Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, The Last Jedi trailer was released alongside a teaser poster that features Luke, Kylo and Rey.
The trailer is awesome and as a fan, I started to lose my mind. I watched it about fifty times already but I digress. The last scene of the trailer shows Luke standing outside a cave where he states, “I only know one truth…it’s time for the Jedi to end”. It’s unclear who he is talking to, it could be Rey or possibly Obi-wan, Yoda, or even Anakin. Mark Hamill told Fandango:
“Well he’s a completely different person. He had an arc and I think Carrie and Harrison admitted their characters were pretty much the same throughout, but Luke was always changing. Now we have this 30 year gap between the films, so a lot of it is conjecture. It’s not specifically my story – Rey is now the protagonist.”
It seems at this point Luke doesn’t consider himself a Jedi anymore, which would explain his exile. The Jedi are protectors of peace and much like Master Yoda and Obi-Wan, Luke has given up on his mission to uphold peace in the galaxy. We know that Luke is training Rey, that much is shown in the trailer. I think we can assume it is in the ways of the light side of the force; to become a Jedi. The last Jedi.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theaters December 15!
