According to multiple media outlets, Zendaya may be playing Mary Jane Watson in Sony’s upcoming Spiderman: Reboot.
It was originally reported in March that Disney star Zendaya was cast to play a character named Michelle. This wouldn’t be uncommon for the studio to give out a false name in order to keep the true character under wraps but there has been no official announcement or confirmation from Marvel Studios, Sony or 19 year old Zendaya as of yet. All of this is alleged but what we do know is the “Shake It Up” series star will be playing an important role in the film. Whether or not that is MJ Watson remains to be determined.
Mary Jane Watson is the romantic interest of Peter Parker. They both attend the same high school and Peter has a major crush on Mary Jane but has no idea how to tell her. Eventually along the story arc, Peter and Mary Jane get married after High School but for the purposes of this movie, MJ will play Peter’s high school crush.
If the film is based around a young Peter still in high school then this casting is an excellent choice. Zendaya is still young like Spiderman star Tom Holland; they’re actually 1 year apart at 19 and 20 years old respectively. A younger cast could prove well over time for future Spiderman movies if Homecoming performs well at the box office. There is a greater opportunity for more films without needing to immediately take Peter out of high school in the next film, as was done with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s incarnations of Spiderman. The reason being, both Maguire and Garfield were nearing the age of 30 when they first donned the Spider suit and doing a second film with them still in high school would have been bordering unbelievable.
All of this is up in the air right now but we’re looking forward to the possibilities for future Spiderman films and castings. Let us know in the comments section how you feel about the possibility of Zendaya playing Mary Jane in Spiderman: Homecoming.
