Negative reviews be damned. They weren’t enough to stop the Suicide Squad from pulling in $20.5 million at the box office Thursday night, bringing its international take to $29.6 million so far.
Guardians of The Galaxy held the previous August record with $11.6 million on Thursday night and $94.3 million for the weekend. There’s no telling if that number is a good or bad sign for the Squad considering all the negative reviews.
Early predictions have the movie making a little over $100 million for the weekend which would be a new August record and bode well for future DC movies. Warner Bros. execs have to ecstatic with the financial results regardless of the negative backlash. As long as these films make money, the studios will continue making them for our consumption. I for one, welcome this new DC universe and its diverse characters and I can’t wait to see more.
Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters.
